Lies

An unfortunate fact about our lives is that lies surround us everyday. This has been a constant since the days of the first men on earth dealt wit each other. The reasons have shifted and changed for hundred of situations from courting a member of the opposite sex (or the same sex sometimes) to igniting wars.
My greatest question has been; when does a lie become a lie though? If a person repeats another person's lie though it is a lie the speaker did not lie themselves so that would make what they are saying the truth to them. As much as lies should be avoided it is also obvious that they are sometimes necessary or wanted deeply due to situations. I for one do not want to tell lies no matter how tempting however. In exchange I must turn to the philosophy that: it is not a lie if the person doesn't ask. In other words avoidance and admission. Though this is in itself a type of lying it is also the only alternative I see available in order to reach the goals of not allowing for lies to exit my mouth and to not tell some people hurtful information.

Woman in the Glass Box

I was talking to a friend the other day and mentioned that they reminded me of a poem or story I had read. When I tried to look for it I found out there are several movies and art pieces with a similar name but could not find the poem I thought I read. So maybe it was a work I had either started or thought of and never did. Anyway here is the poem I created yesterday in honor of the poem/story that never was and the one who inspired it:

"Lady Behind the Glass"
'Do not touch!' The sign is as easily ignored as the fingers that smudge the surface-
of the glass box.
Eyes focus on every move, ignoring all but-
what lies in, the behind the glass.
Men feel a sick excitement while they watch her, unnoticed, go through her routine, their gazes unnoticed.
only to have the pace of heartbeats quicken when she meets his eyes and he draws out her smile-
She,the lady in the glass box.
Finally as lust fills his body and his head is lost in the sparkles of her eyes he smashes the box-
Freeing the one in the glass prison
Soon they are in each others arms while nary he notice his own soul sucked away, Only his body is left in-
the shattered cage in which "love" slept.

Wickhead

I have had a severe Wickhead fix lately. Wickhead is a band that is out from South Africa and moved to America about a years or two ago. (I think, they had just come out when I saw them play but I don't remember when that was exactly) I would highly suggest their "If it hurts it's healing album" I have been playing it nonstop for about a week.

Reminds me of S.N.L.

The controversy over the family who supposedly made a false report that their child had been in a weather balloon reminds me of an old Saturday Night Live skit.
A favorite of mine it, featuring Eddie Murphy, had a gunman shot and kill the
Buckwheat from the show Our Gang / The Little Rascals. The news reporter made a solid point that the reason for shootings such as these were that the gunman was looking for the media's attention and that any additional coverage would only fulfill the shooter's goals and further the likelihood for other gunman seeking attention to follow in his footsteps. The news covered this statement with attention showered on the gunman and his past for several days.
I did not know about the weather balloon until news networks continually spoke about the Heene family, questioning how the boy got on and if it was a hoax or not. While I understand the police pressing charges if they need to I do not see a need for news stations to have hourly updates, start to research the family's possible criminal behaviors which go back to before I was born, or speculating on the family life of the couple.
If the family did stage the event for media attention then I guess they are getting exactly what they wished for if the news organizations are any judge. Meanwhile, there are many stories out in the world and our neighborhoods from typhoon ravaged countries to inspirational local people who fight against the odds that deserve the time and attention the mass media are not providing to them. Why waste time with the same story over and over? Is not the media coverage to the point of only adding fuel to a fire instead of warning people about the flames?

National Novel Writing Month

I received my e-mail reminder from NaNoWriMo. That's right in about a month's time I should be mostly through with a novel. Interestingly I found out my old account still works too so I do not have to set up a new one. So in order to keep my self encouraged I am telling you all. Here is my account page.

No Hurt is Good for Me

*Warning* This is a pointless complaint *Warning*

Gosh, another show I can't go to has come around. My reason for missing the show is not that I have conflicts in my schedule or even a worry about being too tired after studying. Instead it's because the show is at the club Good Hurt. It seems everyone has had a show at Good Hurt lately. This all just after I found out the age limit of the club limits me. Ever-since a guitarist from a local band recommended that I go to a show just to experience the place with it's jail/hot nurse theme I've really wanted to check it out. It seems opportunities came in the form of some of my favorite bands having shows there. Now if only I was a year older!

New Material coming soon

I am working a bit for a newsletter so I will start to archiving some of my works here. For the newsletter there is a word-limit for articles so I the entries here will be the longer unedited version of the ones that appear in print. I got the idea while looking at gladwell's site. He has an archive of his work, going back over a decade. Quite an inspiration for a young writer like myself which I hope to follow.

America embarassed me again

A friend mentioned something the other day that I must readily agree with. How can America continuously badger other nations about not have fair elections or elections that do not show the will of the people when we have our own large and long-drawn out series of The most recent and obvious case of today would be Minnesota's election of their senator. How often have we basically pressured other countries to have elections, then hounded them to have the results quickly.
The American government often cries with the excuse that it wants equal rights for all and for all to have fair representation-in other countries but how about in its own nation? If we are that focused on fair and speedy representation of the people how in the world have we let it take over half a year for Alan Franken to gain the Minnesota senator's chair? This is an embarrassingly long time to have an election draw out. I am just glad that is now over, though its not like we have a still growing pile of problems in other areas we need to fix.

The Last Airbender Movie

I just saw a preview trailer for The Last Airbender. I did not know a movie was being made (or if I did know I have forgot since finding out). I am excited to see it, The Last Airbender was one of the few American cartoons that I can see appealing to adults and children. with an interesting storyline and developed characters.
I have seen it with Japanese animation which is why I think there is such a following of anime today among my friends. It goes back to people raised on comics and looking for a mature version to enjoy. I guess I should have expected the movie if I did not know about it, many comicbook based movies have been produced lately so I think the movie industry definitely sees the market out there.
In hope that the Airbender movie will not disappoint, and stand out as a great movie as the majority of caomicbook movies have done. If so maybe that will open the door for more great American animation. I look forward to 2010 to see.

More Quotes

Those who know me well know that I enjoy quotes. However I do not believe you should only look at the "great thinkers" for wise words. Therefore I decided to share a few of my own words with you. I will not say they are wise or brimming with knowledge but they at least give you insight on myself if not a different view of the world.

+"I have yet to be convinced that humans are the smartest animals."
+"If you are already late I doubt a dollar makes a difference."
+"As one who occasionally spouts nonsense, I have the unique ability to spot idiots and need to tell you something...."
+"I don't mind that you cursed at me but, I would appreciate if you used some style and originality."
+"An argument is a good conversation! If I only wanted to hear someone agree with me I would talk to myself...or a parrot. Actually probably a parrot, I argue with myself too."
+"I understand why you carry your belief, however I do not agree with the assumptions that lead you there."
+I almost bit off my tongue, trying not to argue."

Dow Jones

Pretty funny video I just found on Common's blog

Outer Limits

I have been more of a Twilight Zone fan throughout the years so may be I just missed something. I watched a The Outer Limits episode today and found something strange in their intro. I know this is hypothetical and there are few reasons for the creators to make an answer for it but it still bugs me... If the Outer Limits takes control of your television; why give it back?

Do they just not have enough stories to fill a day?
Is it like an emergency warning system and they are just giving you bit of information before returning to regular broadcast?
When there were only a handful of channels did that mean a lot more than it does now with 1,000s?

So there is no real purpose for this post except to list some of the thoughts that went through my head while I watched television(I know thoughts while watching television is miracle enough!)

Which came first?

Which came first the chicken or the egg? Whenever I hear this famous quandary I always think how much I don’t care. However when then someone explains how this is a deep metaphysical question. To which I must answer it is actually very simple. The way I see it is like a lot of things in life. People made it more complicated than it needed to be.

Simply put the answer is chicken.

My evidence?

1. The Bible: In the beginning of Genesis(New American Standard) god created swarms of living creatures and birds in the heaven. It also mentions that these animals will bring "after its kind". A term I take as to give birth to its own species. I suppose it could have been an egg first but I would think the good book would have said something about “seeds” or the “beginnings of life” coming first. I know some will not find the bible a credible source but I like to examine all available evidence so include it.

2. Evolution: Personally I’m not too sure about evolution but I can see the argument for theistic evolution. The theory of a bunch of random events and mutated species creating the biosphere that exists today that includes millions of diverse animals and plants and must be carefully balanced seems unlikely to me.

For the sake of argument (and to prove my point) we will take it as a fact. That means we are also left with the fact that an egg is always considered the same species as whatever laid the egg- fish, bird, etc. So it is not until the creature inside the egg hatches and matures can it be differentiated and defined as another animal. No matter what its parents were there had to be a first chicken.

3. My last piece of evidence the life of chickens and all birds. Just looking at hatchlings you can see how useless and pathetic they are. While chickens are some of the more independent with mother hens that do not directly feed chicks, instead leading them to food sources, the chicks are still dependent on the mother. Without the adult nesting and clucking it is unlikely chicks will hatch must less live. If it was up to a few solitary eggs there would not be any chickens today.

Luckily, since I enjoy many chicken dishes there are chickens today. Like I said at the beginning I really don’t care which came first. All that really matters to me is that I can eat both the egg and the chicken on the same day.

Funky Songs

Has anyone noticed that the songs of the 1980's with funk were kind of long? Not that I mind, in my opinion many of those artist put more effort in their music and performance than current-day musicians. I don't mean that as a knock toward modern musics but there was a different environment with its own guidelines as there will be a different environment in the future.

I wonder about Wonder Woman

So I just watched a Wonder Woman movie. I haven't really been a Wonder Woman fan as a comic book reader, only reading about her when her stories involved heroes I was interested in like Batman or the JLA and when she killed that guy with the crisis stroyline. However I was given the movie (which was actually really good)and can't help but think, was the thing to wonder about Wonder-Woman not that she was a female hero but that she was able to wear a bathing suit was she fought crime and never had some type of embarrassing costume malfunction occur.

Music and People

Does anyone ever find they associate songs with people? I do. I already know some others do because you always hear of people who were in a relationship having a song that makes them think of the person. However I am referring to those aside from the deep romantically emotional relationship connects for the most part here.
I think it must be natural to have a mental connection between a song and person for is not music emotional. The same way a picture can make people think of an event or a smell; music works in a similar pattern. Music can remind people of an event that is connected to it like a obon song to an obon or gongs to a festival or performance that featured them.
I am curious about mental connections that are not tied to a specific memory though. For instance I always think of an elementary school friend when I hear Santana's "Maria Maria" or how I think of a certain teacher I had when I hear No Doubt's "Spiderwebs" however I have no idea why. Maybe there is a memory at the core of these connects that I don't really remember now yet I still wonder how many others have these seemingly arbitrary connections.

Two hands for Burger!

Burger commercials are starting to annoy me. I can't believe how many show people eating a burger with both hands-even some small enough to eat with a pinkie and thumb. The reason I think this annoys me is because I actually really like burgers (and anything sandwich-like). Most big chains however have the worst burgers. Burger stands are almost uniformly better than franchises. Of course there are exceptions however I would stand by the statement.
Somehow I ended up writing a quick poem about the ads.

Burger Ad
Pointless ad,
You of illusions and images with faults.
We may partake,
due to convenience's sake.
Don't take credit.
You have no idea, how long I considered walking away from it.

Mage

The only problem with great comic books and manga is that you can miss the end. Because they are not published as widely as books it seems easy to miss your place and eventually not read the end.
Recently I started looking at an old series I had. I can't believe it but it seems I will not find the last issue of a great comic book. I have wondered how a certain comic book (Mage 2/ Mage: a Hero Defined) ended for years.Worst is I had this belief about the book before when I missed the last of the first series. I never got to read all of the first series Mage: a Hero Discovered but years later found the second series so found out what happened and found the story better than ever. Lately (well today)I visited a fan site for the comic which listed what happened in each book and it seems like it really ended just like that with --Kirby-insert ending here those who have read it-and Kevin's bat-- so I wasn't the only one left hanging. Then I realized they had not added all the books and unluckily for me happened to end on the same book I already have.
I guess that is a life lesson-make sure you keep up on reading every great comic you find or else it will haunt you for years.

Barbarians

Recently I have rekindled my love of history. Of course this has only reminded me that history can be pretty subjective. For instance there are a lot of groups who have been considered barbarians. Yet in hindsight barbarians were really any group who had different views than you. Which based on current American history books means people different than Romans. However many of these barbarians had their own developed culture, laws and religions. The biggest evidence of them matching the perceived view of a barbarian is that most had no writing system of their own, however considering that most were nomadic there is always the chance that writing systems have just not survived.
Thinking about it in a new light settlers of the Americas would be considered barbarians. In both cases people migrated to a land where others lived and conquering them due to goals such as gaining wealth, being persecuted, or just to start a new life. And in both cases settlers learned from The biggest difference I see is that Native American nations were not united and did not direct the new groups to attack each other as Rome had.

Air What!?!

I'm not sure if this has to do with a general lost of decency in America or really as humorous and funny as I find it. I have not even heard of it until recently and wonder how many people have heard of Air sex. I guess it should have been expected it. How many air guitar contest can there be without involving people's hormones. It seems all roads lead to people's bodily functions at some point.
I can say though, that discovering it was really not how I wanted to start a new year but that is what happened on my new years day. If what happens on the new years day affects the rest of the year I sure hope the celebrations I went to beforehand had more of an impact than the shock or reading that. There was a pamphlet on the car advertising an event with an Air Sex competition. Almost as interesting as the very fact there is a competition for it was the first rule list which basically was: Don't have sex for real! It worries me they had to list that at all.
